Ulrike Veit studied Materials Science at the University Jena, graduating in 2010 with Diploma
(equivalent. to MSc, overall grade "very good") . Since then she has been a PhD student at the
Otto-Schott-Institut für Materialforschung in the work group of Prof. Rüssel. The title of her Thesis is:
"Development and investigation of properties of high-strength Calcium Oxide-Magnesium Oxide- Aluminum Oxide-Siliciumdioxide glasses".

The properties of good glass forming systems within the
CaO-Al
2O
3-SiO
2-system (CAS) were evaluated. Different glass compositions close to and of the lowest eutectic (1170°C) composition within the
CaO-Al
2O
3-SiO
2-system have been melted from laboratory raw materials. Their compositions differed not more than 3 ma% in each component.

Density, Young's Modulus, and viscosity data have been evaluated. It was of special
interest to get information of all these properties of the glasses and to see the effect of
small changes in the composition of these glasses. The temperature attributed to a certain
viscosity changes up to 100 K. The values of Young's Moduli were identical within the
error limit. Density varied between 2.59 g/cm³ and 2.67 g/cm³. Density, Tg, and
viscosity depend on the network structure. The largest effect was observed in T3,
the temperature where the viscosity is 10
3 dPas.
